What Is the Android Cupcake?

google’s Android operating system was first released to the public in 2008, and has since undergone a number of version upgrades. Each version’s developmental code name is based on a dessert item, and named in alphabetical order. Version 1.5 of the Android OS came under the code name “Cupcake,” and introduced a number of upgrades for devices running Android.

Android
Android is an operating system designed by Google for mobile devices including smartphones and tablet computers. Built upon the Linux operating system, the Android OS gained considerable market-share in the smartphone market, and as of publication is one of the major competing operating systems installed on smartphones and tablet computers.

Cupcake
Android OS version 1.5, also known as Cupcake, is an early refinement of the Android OS. It was released in May of 2009 for North American users, although Android developers had a release as early as April of that same year. This over-the-air release gave users a number of key improvements over the previous Android OS, version 1.1, which had been released in February of 2009.
Improvements

The Cupcake release included a number of improvements to the user interface and performance. The user interface got a general polish, including animated window transitions. For performance, the camera start-up and image capture were sped up, as well as the acquisition of GPS location signals. The scrolling for the browser was smoothed out, and the scrolling for Gmail conversation lists was sped up.
Features
Several new features were introduced with the release of Cupcake. These included an onscreen soft keyboard (which could also be replaced with third-party keyboards), a variety of small system tools called widgets and the ability to record and play back video. Improved support for Bluetooth including auto-pairing was also added, as well as many updates to the browser and the contacts list. The ability to upload videos directly to YouTube and photos to Picasa was also added.
Successors
Cupcake was not the last version of Android to be released. As of publication, ten further releases have been made. These include version 1.6 (Donut), versions 2.0 and 2.1 (Eclair), version 2.2 (Froyo), versions 2.3, 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 (Gingerbread), and versions 3.0, 3.1, and 3.2 (Honeycomb). As of publication, Honeycomb is the current Android OS, although Android 4.0 was announced at Google’s I/O conference. Android version 4.0 is tentatively titled “Ice Cream Sandwich.”
